NOW PLAYING!
Tyanna J. Buie
August 8 - September 20, 2025
We are so excited to announce our first exhibition and the opening reception for Tyanna J. Buie: Now Playing! on Friday, August 8th from 5-8PM. Now Playing! will be on view from August 8 - September 20, 2025. We cannot wait to see you!
Now Playing! is an exhibition that explores the layered intersections of memory, media, and identity through a series of short experimental films and digital works on paper. This exhibition invites audiences into a speculative archive, where the invisible becomes visible, and where histories, personal, cultural, and political, are not just revisited, but reassembled. It is both a cinematic meditation on identity in flux, and a critical call to rethink authorship, representation, and the performance of self in a hyper-mediated world.
Sourcing from the endless stream of digital and social media content, Buie deconstructs and reframes moving images through the lens of her lived experience as a Black woman in contemporary America. These works serve as both a reflection and a critique, examining how Black identity is performed, circulated, and consumed in the digital landscape.
Guided by the ethos of Afro-Futurism, Now Playing! approaches technology not as a neutral tool but as a powerful means of reimagining inclusive and pluralistic futures. Using accessible smartphone applications like ReFace, as well as Deep-Fake technologies, Buie manipulates and reanimates video fragments pulled from social media, Black popular culture, and shared cultural memory. By inserting her own likeness into these excerpts, she engages in acts of self-authorship, re-inscription and disruption, while blurring the lines between presence and absence, visibility and erasure.
An award-winning Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI native, Tyanna Buie is a visual artist who received her BA from Western Illinois University, and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Buie has attended Artists-In-Residency programs throughout the country and has been a visiting artist lecturer in Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Rhode Island, and Arizona. She maintains one of the most active and dynamic exhibition schedules, showing her work in numerous juried, group, and solo exhibitions every year. Buie’s work has been acquired by major institutions and private collections nationally.
