Material Workshop with Hannah Smith

Join artist Hannah Smith in creating a small-scale casting using a simple gelatin-sand bioplastic recipe that they created on the beach; that’s right, the beach! The artist will be 3D printing a couple of simple designs for you to select from and create the design under their direction.

Bioplastic is a generic term to describe polymers that are completely biodegradable and typically created using household ingredients. For this material workshop, we will be using vinegar, gelatin, water, sand, and vegetable oil. Join us at the opening reception of CRYSTALBLUFFMADONNA on Friday, August 14th from 5-8PM to participate.

This simple gelatin-sand bioplastic mix was used for the sand-castle ball end on this piercing (shown: Hannah Smith, Mass Explosions, Soup Too Hot, Ice Too Cold, Grass Too Green, Sky Too Blue, 2026. Biocomposite terrazzo with recycled PLA and oyster shell aggregate, cast bioplastic and tapioca starch rubber. 40 x 20 x 10 inches.).
